India can be broadly divided into six climatic regions based on temperature and precipitation patterns:
- Tropical rainforest climate: This climate is found in the Western Ghats, the northeastern states, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is characterized by high temperatures, high humidity, and heavy rainfall throughout the year.
- Tropical wet and dry climate: This climate is found in most of central and peninsular India, including parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. It is characterized by hot summers, cool winters, and distinct wet and dry seasons.
- Humid subtropical climate: This climate is found in the northern part of India, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab. It is characterized by hot summers, cool winters, and high rainfall during the monsoon season.
- Arid and semi-arid climate: This climate is found in the western and northwestern parts of India, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Maharashtra. It is characterized by low rainfall, high temperatures, and dry and hot summers.
- Alpine climate: This climate is found in the higher elevations of the Himalayas, including Ladakh, parts of Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. It is characterized by extremely cold temperatures, heavy snowfall, and short summers.
- Coastal climate: This climate is found along the coasts of India, including the west coast and the east coast. It is characterized by moderate temperatures, high humidity, and heavy rainfall during the monsoon season.
These climatic regions play an important role in shaping the culture, economy, and natural environment of the different regions of India.
