Article 58 of the Constitution of India lays down the qualifications required for a person to be eligible for election as the President of India. The qualifications are as follows:
- The person must be a citizen of India.
- The person must have completed 35 years of age.
- The person must be qualified to be a member of the Lok Sabha, the Lower House of Parliament. This means that the person must be a registered voter and must not be disqualified from contesting elections under any law in force in India.
- The person must not hold any office of profit under the Government of India or the government of any state or under any local or other authority subject to the control of any of these governments.
In addition to these qualifications, it is also important to note that the President must have the capacity to carry out the duties of the office, and must not be suffering from any physical or mental disability that would prevent him or her from doing so.
It is also important to note that the Vice-President of India, Governors of States, and Ministers at the Centre or in the States are not eligible to contest the Presidential election while holding office.
