Session of the parliament

Session of the Parliament

The Indian Parliament has three sessions in a year:

  1. Budget Session: The Budget Session of Parliament is held in the months of February to May. This session is primarily devoted to the presentation and passage of the Union Budget, which outlines the government’s revenue and expenditure plans for the upcoming financial year.
  2. Monsoon Session: The Monsoon Session of Parliament is usually held in July and August. This session is meant to transact important legislative business and to discuss matters of public interest.
  3. Winter Session: The Winter Session of Parliament is held in November and December. This session is also meant to transact important legislative business and to discuss matters of public interest.

Apart from these regular sessions, there can also be special sessions of Parliament called by the President of India. These special sessions are usually called to address urgent matters of national importance.

Each session of Parliament is divided into sittings. A sitting can be of two types – the morning sitting and the evening sitting.

The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha sit separately, and each house has its own schedule of sittings. The sittings are presided over by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha or the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, as the case may be.

During the session, various activities take place, including the introduction and passage of bills, discussions on policy issues and matters of public importance, and question hour where members can ask questions of ministers. The session ends with the prorogation of Parliament, which marks the end of that particular session.
