The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is composed of a chairman and other members appointed by the President of India. The current structure of the commission consists of one chairman and ten members.
The chairman of the UPSC is appointed by the President and holds office for a term of six years or until he/she attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. The chairman is not eligible for reappointment to the commission or to any government position after retirement.
The members of the UPSC are also appointed by the President of India and hold office for a term of six years or until they attain the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. Members are eligible for reappointment to the commission or to any government position after retirement.
The qualifications for appointment as a member of the UPSC are as follows:
- The candidate must be a citizen of India.
- The candidate must have completed the age of 35 years and must not have attained the age of 65 years.
- The candidate must have held an office under the government of India or the government of a state for at least ten years.
- The candidate must have a good record of service and integrity.
- The candidate should not have been convicted of any criminal offence or involved in any criminal case.
The UPSC members are responsible for conducting various recruitment examinations and interviews for the central government of India. They also advise the government on matters related to the recruitment and selection of candidates for various positions in the central government.
